WolframAlpha – a pretty cool “computational knowledge engine”
I used WolframAlpha quite a bit during finals week and liked it a lot. It’s pretty neat if you want need to do some calculations and don’t have a calculator handy, or need to look up information on a statistics distribution. You can also use it to look up something non-math related. If you type in ‘cat’ it gives you the scientific name and a graphical map of its taxonomy. If you type in the name of a state it gives you a map, population, average income and other statistics. It’s also pretty useful for a dictionary, if you type in a word it can give you definitions, word origins, rhyming words, and synonyms. It’s a bit limited on what it understands, but I still think it is pretty cool. If you haven’t tried it you should check it out.
